I have grown up just one hour away from a mini Switzerland. A valley where peaks soar towards the sky, green valleys surround rivers and lakes reflect the clouds as to be akin to a mirror. Slocan Lake is a gem that has yet to be discovered. The 40km lake that makes up the heart of this area is encompassed in by three major, kootenay ranges; the Goat, the Selkirks and the stunning Valhallas. I have ventured many times into the mountains but I had not yet traveled the water.
After nearing two months of waiting for the weather to cooperate myself and my girlfriend were finally able to paddle the length the lake during a bright period of a inherently rainy summer. The paddle took 3 days and we were blessed with numerous sandy beaches, pictographs on rock faces, waterfalls and iridescent blue water with hardly a human in sight. The Slocan never disappoints.
