The kootenays is full of mining history that dates back over 100 years, and the valley between New Denver and Kaslo holds a large amount of those exploration times. There are claims littered through the mountains; some still being mined and other left to the breakdown of time to rust away into the earth. On many of the old trails that brave and, sometimes, crazy men built straight up peaks to their fortunes are still used today.
Hiking Lyle Creek Basin is one of those places. The road up to the trailhead begins close to the popular Retallack lodge.
